Getting off on the Right Foot

Here I am hoping to go over some of what I hope to do through my free inquiry project. First, it’s important that you know a bit about me…

My name is Riley Milroy and I am currently a student at UVic (as are the majority of those likely reading this blog). I have a Bachelors of Art with English as my major and French as my Minor, however, neither of these are my passions. For some time now I have been illustrating, both digitally and on paper, as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Art began as an escape and a creative expression and, while continuing to be both of those things, it has developed into a great passion and a business. My wife and I operate on Instagram under the name Crimson Studio; through this platform and via word of mouth we have been able to create and get paid for it, a dream I never realized I possessed. I’m hoping at this point you can see why a free inquiry project on illustrating might just be up my alley.

Through my free inquiry project I will be looking at both paper and digital mediums and essentially diving into the diversities we find in illustration (as a blanket term). I will be experimenting with pointillism (stippling) and crosshatching as forms of shading, American traditional artwork, digital illustration with watercolour, and several other styles and techniques that will make themselves known as my process goes on. With each example I will be sharing some of my inspiration for teach technique or style that I try. Im excited to share both my successes and my failures with you.
