Rich McCue was guest speaker today who showed us how to implement H5P content into our blog posts. Unfortunately, there were several server issues and we were not able to demonstrate the use of H5P content in our personal blogs. Instead , I would like to reflect on how it could be useful by pulling an example from the H5P website .
As a lover of Christmas time, I chose to try the advent calendar function. I figured that the advent idea could be used as a token system for rewarding students for studying before a test. The test would come at the end of their studying. Each day would be a different piece of the advent calendar, until our big test. Alternatively, it could be used personally in a variety of other ways. I look forward to using these H5P elements in my future classroom.
I’d also like to reflect on some other aspects that struck me as we discussed them in class. Rich showed us a 360 degree camera that is accessible to us students at UVic. I thought this would be a really fun way of creating virtual tours of various buildings downtown or elsewhere instead of an entire field trip. Students do enjoy using technology during class time, plus the added element of AV support is extremely engaging!
Rich also mentioned there was a good amount of research regarding AV presentations. I was interested when we told us that people retain spoken information better when there is an associated image to the content the speaker is talking about. This would be opposed to having text on screen along with a speaker talking. I will definitely remember this for when I am making presentations for my classes. We also talked in groups about the pros and cons of instructional videos in a class. The pros were that they are multimodal (engagement), they can be self-paced, and there are so many pre-made learning tools (easy for teachers). The cons would be loss of personal connection with students, there are sometimes annoying pop-ups and ads (on youtube specifically) , and computers are often used inside (no sunlight!). Ultimately, there are some benefits to instructional videos, but they should not be a constant crutch for a teacher.
Thanks for reading!

This is awesome and you are such a talented artist, Riley! I loved how you shared the history behind these types of illustrations, and it was so cool to learn how this style of work was born from the rebellious lifestyle of sailors in the early twentieth century. I also love how you edited your video with a distinct style that is authentic to you, and I think you should continue finding ways to personalize your videos in the upcoming weeks as it adds a lot of personality to your content. While both the black and white background look great, my preference is the white background! 🙂
If you are ever in Toronto, you should check out this tattoo shop: http://www.theokeydoke.com/
It reminds me of the styles your explored in your video.
